Elevate Your Investing Acumen: Startup Investor Accelerator & Leapfunder

Sufeng Li is an angel investor with a background in Finance X Product Development. He’s empowering startups through strategic insights and impactful investments. We talked to him about the SIA program, which provides a comprehensive, fully remote three-month experience to elevate your investing acumen, advice for his fellow angel investors, and the largest European angel network, Leapfunder. Check out the interview.

  1. Hi Sufeng, thanks for agreeing to do this interview. Could you tell us about your background and how did you become an angel investor?

I have a background in digital transformation within the finance domain. My career has equipped me with deep analytical expertise, strategic thinking, and a passion for innovation. In late 2023, I embarked on my journey as an angel investor, focusing on FinTech, EdTech, and other cutting-edge technologies. I am particularly drawn to startups with transformative potential and strong teams, aiming to not only provide funding but also guidance to help them grow sustainably.

  1. You already invested in startups before joining the SIA program. What motivated you to join the program initially?

I was motivated to join the SIA program because of its focus on real-life cases, which provide invaluable exposure to the entire angel investment pipeline — from pitching and selection to due diligence. The opportunity to learn alongside the whole team was particularly appealing, as it allowed me to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative environment. Additionally, the program offers fantastic networking opportunities to connect with other European angels, which has been instrumental in broadening my perspective and building valuable relationships in the ecosystem.

  1. Can you share a key takeaway or lesson that has impacted you or stood out to you the most during the program?

Building your own investment thesis is crucial because it serves as a guiding framework for making informed decisions. It helps you focus on startups that align with your expertise, values, and long-term goals, ensuring consistency and reducing impulsive choices. During the program, I realized how a well-defined thesis not only streamlines the evaluation process but also enables clearer communication with founders and co-investors. It’s a key to investing with purpose and achieving meaningful impact.

  1. How has this program influenced your confidence and approach to angel investing?

The structured learning environment has helped me approach opportunities with a more analytical mindset, while the collaborative setting has provided diverse perspectives that challenge and enhance my thinking.

  1. What would you say to someone considering joining this program, new and already experienced investors?

This program is valuable for both new and experienced angel investors. New investors gain a strong foundation and confidence, while seasoned angels discover fresh perspectives, refine strategies, and expand networks. No matter your experience, there’s always something new to learn.

  1. Finally, programs like SIA aim to empower angel investors, and platforms like Leapfunder provide a space to put those skills into action. How do you see the connection between what you learned in the program and leveraging platforms like Leapfunder to find and support startups?

There’s a strong synergy between programs like SIA and platforms like Leapfunder. Many great startups participate in SIA, but due to the rules, only one can win the final check. However, as angel investors, we’re often interested in supporting other finalists, such as the final 6 or even the final 12. For example, one of the participating startups was raising funds on Leapfunder, and many SIA participants made their first investment through the platform in that startup. This shows the potential for closer collaboration between SIA and Leapfunder, enabling angel investors to access more startups and provide broader support. Exploring how to strengthen this connection would benefit both startups and investors alike.

Thank you very much for the interview, Sufeng. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
